Commonwealth Fusion Systems

Cfs dangler

Just outside of Boston, Commonwealth Fusion Systems is constructing a machine that until recently existed only in the world of science fiction. If it functions as predicted, the device, called SPARC, will generate at least ten times as much power as goes into it. The emissions-free fuel can release a breathtaking 10 million times more energy than the same weight of fossil fuel, all starting this decade. That’s possible because CFS has developed revolutionary magnets that enable the fastest path to commercial fusion energy.

Moving fusion power, and a future with abundant clean energy, closer to reality.

  • Why this matters

The next step from CFS, the ARC power plant, can offer something never done before: clean energy that can be located anywhere on the planet. Since fusion can produce energy from the hydrogen in water, the ability to benefit from fusion power won’t depend on whether you have oil under your feet, sunlight shining down, or wind blowing. Energy of this type can create a social license to consume electricity that could generate new, unimagined industries. It could be the beginning of a healthier, safer, more prosperous future for all human life, one that includes everyone.

  • What you can do

Spread the word about fusion energy on social media and chat with others about it, including folks who make decisions. Get involved in your community to help people understand the pros and cons of fusion energy. Keep expectations realistic about when it'll be ready — but be clear it'll be soon enough to help address climate change. Also, think about how fusion energy could be used for things beyond just making electricity, like producing hydrogen, desalinating water, and capturing carbon.
