Pioneer Works is a nonprofit cultural center in Red Hook, Brooklyn, dedicated to building community through the integration of arts and sciences. By fostering multidisciplinary collaborations, the organization provides artists, scientists, and technologists with the resources and space to innovate together. Through diverse programs, exhibitions, residencies, and performances, Pioneer Works promotes lifelong learning and fosters an open and curious world.

Why this matters

Pioneer Works was hit by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, during the early days of the restoration of our former factory building. That first confrontation with nature, as a young cultural center, left its literal mark on the brick and mortar, which retains a stain from the flooding. Situated on the waterfront in Red Hook, Brooklyn, we share with our neighbors the immediate concerns over our climate future. By bringing together makers and thinkers in proximity, we encourage and celebrate innovative reflections and solutions around today's problems — including environmental impact — with an emphasis on the importance of artistic and scientific contributions.
